Is the sanctity of the Eid prayer area (musalla) like the sanctity of the mosque?
The jurists differed concerning the 'Eid prayer ground (Musalla). The Hanbalis held that it has the ruling of a mosque, citing the hadith of Umm 'Atiyyah: "The menstruating women were commanded to keep away from the Musalla of the Muslims." Some of them restricted this ruling to cases where the place was endowed for prayer. The majority of scholars held that the 'Eid Musalla does not have the ruling of a mosque, except regarding the validity of following the Imam. The Malikis are of the view that it does not have the ruling of a mosque, thus it is permissible for a person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) to stay in it, and so on. It was also said that it becomes a mosque only during the performance of the prayer.
