An ignorant person is excused for engaging in intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan—if they were unable to learn the religious rulings, such as a recent convert to Islam or someone raised in a remote desert region. In such cases, there is no make-up fast (qada') nor expiation (kaffara) due upon them. However, if someone was ignorant of the necessity of expiation, yet aware of the prohibition of intercourse, the expiation is not waived for them.
