How can one reconcile the commentators' statements about the Prophet's defeat, peace be upon him, on the Day of Uhud, with the noble verses: "If you do not aid him, Allah has already aided him," (9:40) "And similarly, it is an obligation upon Us to aid the believers," (30:47) and "Allah has decreed: 'Indeed, I and My messengers will overcome'"? (58:21)

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was not defeated at Uhud. Whoever claims so has lied and contradicted authentic narrations. Scholars have explicitly stated that the one who makes such a claim is a disbeliever. What happened at Uhud was that the Muslims suffered severe losses, some of them turned away and exposed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then they returned to him and defended him until the enemy retreated. What occurred was a result of known mistakes, and there is no contradiction between this and Allah's victory for the believers and His messengers. Victory is a right owed by Allah to the believers if they adhere to their religion and strive in His cause.
