The answer

Islam permits a sick person for whom fasting is difficult or delays their recovery to break their fast, based on the Almighty's saying: ﴿So whoever among you is sick or on a journey [during them] - then [he must make up] an equal number of other days.﴾ It is permissible for him to break his fast by eating or drinking. Some scholars have gone further to permit him to break his fast through sexual intercourse without expiation, by analogy with a traveler. If the illness is temporary, he must make up the missed days. However, if it is chronic, he must feed a poor person for each day. If the illness is mild and does not affect fasting, he is not permitted to break his fast, and if he engages in sexual intercourse, he must offer expiation.
