What is entailed for a man who broke his fast during Ramadan days due to fatigue and thirst, then had intercourse with his wife, and is expiation incumbent upon him even though he did not break his fast to have intercourse?

A fasting person is not permitted to break their fast due to probable thirst and fatigue. If they do so, they are sinful, and repentance, making up the day, and abstaining for the rest of the day become obligatory upon them. Expiation is also required if they engage in intercourse. However, if one fears perishing or harm due to thirst or hunger, they are permitted to break their fast out of necessity. They must then make up that day and, according to many scholars, are not obligated to abstain for the remainder of the day. It is permissible for him to have intercourse with his wife if she has a valid Shar'i excuse for not fasting, other than menstruation or post-natal bleeding. But if she is fasting, it is not permissible for him to have intercourse with her, nor is it permissible for her to obey him in this regard.
