According to the Maliki and Shafi'i schools of thought, the Qunut in the Fajr prayer is a . The Shafi'is also recommend sending prayers and salutations upon the Prophet, his family, and his companions during the Qunut. If one intentionally or unintentionally omits it, prostration of forgetfulness ( as-Sahw) is recommended for him. Praying upon the Prophet is not obligatory for the congregant (ma'mum) or the imam during the Qunut.
