It is not permissible to take out an interest-bearing loan unless there is a necessity that permits committing the forbidden act. The interest on all loans is forbidden usury (riba), which is not made permissible by need, and its sin is lifted only due to necessity. Necessity is a state of severe danger or hardship, such that one fears harm to one's self, limb, honor, mind, or wealth. In such a case, it becomes permissible to commit a forbidden act to avert harm. Luxuries or saving money for trade are not considered necessities that permit borrowing with usury.
