How can we reconcile the hadith "For every deed there is a period of enthusiasm, and for every period of enthusiasm there is a slackening. If its owner is on the right path and striving, then hope for him; but if he is pointed to by the fingers, then do not count on him" with the hadith "Soon you will recognize the people of Paradise from the people of Hellfire."
