What is the guidance of the Prophet, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, regarding the Eid prayers?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray the two Eid prayers in the musalla (prayer ground) and wear his best clothes. He would eat an odd number of dates before going out for Eid al-Fitr, but he would not eat on Eid al-Adha until he returned from the musalla to eat from his sacrifice (udhiyah). He would perform ghusl (ritual bath) for both Eids and walk to and from the prayer ground. He would begin with the prayer before the khutbah (sermon), without adhan (call to prayer) or iqamah (second call to prayer). He would say seven takbirat (Allahu Akbar) in the first rak'ah (unit of prayer) and five in the second, before the recitation. Then he would admonish the people while standing on the ground, without a minbar (pulpit). He would begin his sermons with praise to Allah. He permitted those who attended Eid to sit for the sermon or to depart. He would take a different route on Eid day, going and returning.
