The question

What is the ruling on dryness after menstruation if it is followed by blood, yellowish or brownish discharge, or a pale discharge, then the white discharge (al-Qassah al-Bayda'), or vice versa? And how do I distinguish menstrual blood from irregular bleeding (istihada) if menstrual blood comes in multiple colors? And what should I do in the case of postpartum bleeding (nifas) if the bleeding recurs after seeing the white discharge, whether that is within the forty days or after?

The answer

If a woman's customary purification sign is both dryness (jufuf) and the white discharge (qassah) together, she should wait for the white discharge until the end of the chosen prayer time if she only sees dryness. If her customary purification sign is dryness alone, then if she sees it, she should not wait for the white discharge. Similarly, if she sees the white discharge, she should not wait for dryness. Dryness means that the cloth comes out untainted by blood, turbid discharge (kadira), or yellowish discharge (sufra), and its wetness from the natural moisture of the vagina does not matter. Turbid discharge and yellowish discharge after dryness or the white discharge are not considered anything. If purification is interrupted, the days of bleeding are combined with the days of purity, provided they do not exceed fifteen days. She should perform ghusl whenever the bleeding stops. She is considered menstruating during the days of bleeding and pure during its interruption. The same applies to postpartum bleeding (nifas): if she becomes pure before forty days, she should perform ghusl and pray. If the bleeding returns, it is still considered nifas until the forty days are complete. Anything beyond that is considered irregular bleeding (istihadah), unless it coincides with her regular menstrual period. Distinguishing between menstrual blood and irregular bleeding can be done by color, odor, or pain for those who are able to do so. Those who cannot distinguish are not obliged to do so.
