Is a person who finds hardness in their heart, shortcomings in their actions, an inclination towards worldly life, and heedlessness of the Hereafter during times of ease and prosperity, but whose heart softens, who turns to the Hereafter, shuns worldly life, and becomes active in doing good deeds during times of hardship, distress, and the approach of death—is such a person deceiving themselves, insincere in their faith and conviction, or a hypocrite?
A servant's feeling of weak muraqabah (awareness of God) or heedlessness is not considered hypocrisy. This is something that befalls a person and is similar to what afflicted some of the Companions. A Muslim should always be mindful of Allah Almighty, guard his limbs against disobedience, and hold himself accountable when he errs. Ibn al-Qayyim likened the self to a partner, so one must stipulate with it to guard the limbs, and to watch over and hold it accountable, lest it persist in error and squander the capital.
