What is the ruling on using and circulating items that contain alcohol in the home, such as sanitizers, creams, and door handles, and is it obligatory to wash one's hands after touching them?

If a Muslim is certain that alcohol has been added to materials, then they become impure (najis), and it is not permissible to use them unless the alcohol undergoes a transformation (istihalah) from its original state, becoming non-intoxicating, at which point it becomes pure. This is the view of some scholars who hold that an impure substance becomes pure if it undergoes istihalah. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah preferred this view, stating that "whenever it is known that the impurity has undergone transformation, the water is pure... This is because Allah the Almighty has permitted good things and forbidden evil things, and evil is distinct from good by its attributes. So, if the attributes of water and other substances are those of what is good rather than what is evil, then it must fall under what is permissible, not what is forbidden." Furthermore, alcohol does not have an effect if its proportion is negligible. We advise against succumbing to obsessive doubts (waswasah) concerning matters of purity.
