Are "the limit of proximity and the limit of distance" terms used in the methodology of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, or are they from the methodology of Ahlul-Bid'ah (people of innovation)?

The jurists differed on the limit of distance from water that permits tayammum (definition) (dry ablution). The Hanafis held that it is one mile (four thousand cubits), the Malikis two miles, and the Shafi'is four hundred cubits (the distance of an arrow's shot).

Among the Shafi'is, seeking water is conditional upon safety for oneself and one's property. The Malikis require seeking water if it is certain or presumed to be less than two miles away. The Hanbalis require seeking it if it is conventionally close.
