Does the ablution of one who wipes over their leather socks (khuffayn) or regular socks (jawrabayn) become void if they then take them off?

The scholars differed on the ruling concerning someone who performed ablution (wudu') and wiped over his khuffs (leather socks), then removed them, presenting several opinions:

The first opinion: It is sufficient for him to wash his feet, and his ablution is thereby completed. This is a weak opinion due to its contradiction of the obligation of continuity (al-muwalat) in ablution. The second opinion: His purity (tahara) is invalidated by this, and he must repeat the ablution, because wiping stands in place of washing. By removing the khuff, the purity of the feet is invalidated, and consequently, the entire purity is invalidated. This is the view chosen by Sheikh Ibn Baz. The third opinion: His purity is not invalidated by this until he commits an act that nullifies ablution (hadath). This is the view held by a group of the Salaf, and it was supported by Ibn Hazm, Ibn Taymiyyah, and Al-Nawawi, and preferred by Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen. They argued that purity is not invalidated except by a hadath, and removing the khuffs is not a hadath. They also argued that purity is established by a legal proof and is not nullified except by a proof, and they analogized this to shaving hair after wiping over the head.
