Does ongoing charity for a deceased parent continue after the fan purchased as ongoing charity is stolen or burned, and is it permissible to perform ongoing charity for oneself, or is it exclusively for the deceased?

The questioner is thanked for his dutifulness to his father and his eagerness to benefit him after his death. The reward of the charity has reached the deceased father. However, the benefit of an ongoing charity, whether for the living or the dead, continues as long as the charity itself endures. Al-Mundhiri said that the deceased benefits from what he was a cause for, such as a child, knowledge, or an ongoing charity that remains after him. Giving charity on behalf of the deceased benefits him without dispute, but the original principle is that the living person should give charity for himself so that the reward continues for him after his death. Al-Nawawi, in his commentary on the hadith: "When a person dies, his deeds cease except for three: an ongoing charity, knowledge from which benefit is derived, or a righteous child who supplicates for him," stated that the deeds of the deceased cease except for these three because he was the cause of them. Accordingly, the person who gives charity benefits from the endowments and ongoing charities he establishes for himself after his death.
