What is the ruling on photography with a digital camera and a video camera?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Digital camera photography is of two types:

1. Still photographs: These are not permissible except for permissible and necessary purposes, such as identification, passports, and driver's licenses, and photographing criminals. Photography merely for remembrance is not permissible. 2. Motion pictures (video): These are permissible, but it is forbidden to photograph anything that aids in sin or incites to it, such as immodestly dressed women or places of debauchery and immorality, or places of innovation (bid'ah) and polytheism (shirk) with the intention of glorifying them or pointing to them.
