Contemporary scholars have differed regarding the ruling on video and mobile phone photography of living beings. Some consider it forbidden, like still photography, due to the generality of the evidence, while others deem it permissible.

Sheikh Muhammad ibn Uthaymeen holds that still photography and video photography are permissible because instant still photography does not fall under the imitation of Allah's creation, and the image does not appear on the film. Furthermore, a real need or benefit should not be abandoned due to a disagreement in which the reason for prohibition has not become clear.
