What is the meaning of maintaining kinship ties?

Islam has called for maintaining kinship ties due to their great impact on social cohesion and love among Muslims. This is obligatory according to Quranic texts that warn against severing them and threaten those who cut them off with damnation, a bad abode, and deprivation of abundant sustenance and long life. The one who maintains kinship ties is not merely he who reciprocates kindness, but rather he who connects with his kin even if they cut him off, and who treats them well even if they mistreat him. Whoever does this, it is as if he is "feeding them hot ashes," and he will have a helper from Allah against them.
