You are not accountable for anything in this regard, and it is permissible for you to benefit from anyone known for their knowledge and engagement in it. If scholars differ on an issue, and you are capable of critical examination and preference, then you should prefer what appears to you to be supported by evidence. But if you are a layperson, then you should follow the one among the differing scholars whose knowledge and piety you trust.
