It is permissible to design patterned and colorful clothes for women if the patterns are simple and the colors are subdued, not attracting the attention of men. This is because a condition for the Muslim woman's attire is that it should not be an adornment in itself, meaning it should not draw attention. The wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to wear red and dyed garments if they were not a striking adornment.
