What is the ruling on saying to one's employer, "Forgive me for any wrong I have committed against you, or any shortcoming in my work," with the intention of repenting for embezzling a sum of money from him, while being unable to return it and fearing confession? And is this wording sufficient?

Whoever embezzles money must return it to its owner by any means that does not cause harm or embarrassment, such as a postal order or a bank deposit, without informing him of the embezzlement. One of the conditions for repentance is to return injustices to their rightful owners. The person who resorted to trickery can return the money without being exposed by sending it with a letter explaining that it is from someone who transgressed and repented to Allah. If he is unable to return the right, he must disclose it to its owner and ask for his forgiveness, as a general request for forgiveness is not sufficient for financial rights.
