Furthermore, a guardian (wali) is a condition for the validity of a woman's marriage, whether she is Muslim or from the People of the Book. The guardian of a woman from the People of the Book marries her off from among her own people of faith, or their bishops, or the ruler. It is preferable for a Muslim to marry a righteous Muslim woman who will assist him in matters of his religion, due to the potential harms that may result from marrying a woman from the People of the Book.
