Is it permissible for a woman who cannot conceive to adopt a child and breastfeed him so that she becomes his Mahram through suckling?
If a woman does not lactate and wishes for the child she sponsors to become a mahram to her, her sister, or her brother's wife, or her husband's wife can breastfeed the child, provided that the breastfeeding consists of five known feedings within the two years (of infancy). As for taking medication to induce lactation, scholars have differed regarding its ruling, and the preponderant opinion is that it establishes hurmah (prohibition of marriage). It must be known that adoption which attributes the child's lineage to the sponsor is not permissible in Islam.
