Is it permissible for a person with heart disease and high blood pressure to combine prayers?
It is permissible for a sick person who finds it difficult to perform every prayer at its prescribed time to combine the Dhuhr and Asr prayers, and the Maghrib and Isha prayers, whether by Jamm' Taqdeem (combining earlier) or Jamm' Ta'kheer (combining later). They based this on the Hadith of Ibn Abbas that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, combined prayers without fear or rain. They also based it on their consensus that combining prayers is only permissible due to an excuse, and on the Prophet's, peace and blessings be upon him, command to Hamnah bint Jahsh and Sahla bint Suhail to combine prayers, as they were both suffering from istihada (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding). The Malikis are of the view that the only permissible combination for a sick person is Jamm' Taqdeem, whereas the Hanbalis believe that the sick person has the choice between Taqdeem and Ta'kheer. Combining prayers for the sick is permissible according to a group of Shafi'i jurists, among them Qadi Husain.
