The Prophetic Sunnah encourages the exchange of gifts due to its effect in increasing love and removing grudges among people, and that a gift should not be refused, even if it is simple. An exception to this is a gift to a judge or similar official who was not accustomed to receiving gifts; this is to block the means to bribery. A gift becomes bribery if it is taken in exchange for a right that must be fulfilled, or for a false action that must be abandoned. There is no harm in accepting a gift if the giver's soul is content with it and they have no malicious intent, and it is commendable for the recipient to reciprocate the giver's gift.
