Is academic research into the types of pride—personal, tribal, and Islamic—in pre-Islamic and Islamic poetry considered a sin, even if the goal is to acquire language and understand poetic structure, rather than tribal fanaticism?

It is permissible to research poetry that includes boasting if it serves a permissible goal, such as learning eloquence and rhetoric. Scholars, both ancient and modern, have cited such poetry to define the Arabic language. However, reciting poetry is forbidden if it contains impermissible elements, such as descriptions of women or wine, or disparaging a Muslim or a dhimmi, unless it is for the purpose of citing it as evidence or learning eloquence.
