Did Allah describe Himself as "the Witness" (al-Shahid)?
Allah described Himself as Al-Shahid (The Witness) to make His servants aware that He is watching over them and cognizant of their deeds, as stated in His Almighty قول: (And Allah is a Witness over what you do). Its meaning is that He, glorified be He, is aware of them and knowledgeable of their affairs and circumstances. Thus, it is similar to His descriptions as Al-Alim (The All-Knowing) and Al-Khabir (The All-Aware). Al-Alusi said: "Al-Shahid is the All-Knowing, the All-Aware." And the author of An-Nihayah said: "Al-Shahid is He from Whom nothing is absent."
