What are the foundational/major works of Tafsir (exegesis)?

Some scholars mention examples of major tafsir works, such as Ibn Jarir al-Tabari, al-Qurtubi, and Ibn Kathir. Ibn Taymiyyah said: "The foremost tafsir in narration is that of Ibn Jarir, as he interprets with chains of transmission and narrations from the predecessors of this Ummah." Among the beneficial books of tafsir are also al-Baghawi, Ibn Sa'di, and al-Shanqeeti.

As for beginners in seeking knowledge, Tafsir al-Sa'di is recommended due to its ease and clarity of expression, as it is understandable to both the common person and the student of knowledge alike.
