How do we strengthen our relationship with God?

The relationship with Allah Almighty is strengthened by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions, by drawing closer to Him through supererogatory acts of worship, by adopting good character and shunning bad character, by frequently remembering Allah and supplicating to Him, and by contemplating His Book and His cosmic signs with reflection, as Allah Almighty says: "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for those of understanding who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], 'Our Lord, You did not create this in vain. Exalted are You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'"
