Masturbation during the daytime in Ramadan is a grave sin and an act that breaks the fast, necessitating a make-up fast (qada'). If the make-up fast cannot be performed before the next Ramadan, it remains a debt upon one's conscience. In addition to the make-up fast, an expiation (kaffara) is required: feeding one poor person for each day, which is approximately half a sa' of rice.
