What is the ruling on holding a feast three days after the burial of the deceased?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Holding a banquet three days after the burial of the deceased is contrary to the Sunnah and should therefore be abandoned. This is based on what Imam Ahmad narrated with an authentic chain of transmission from Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: "We used to consider gathering at the deceased's family's house and preparing food after his burial as a form of wailing (niyaha)." The Sunnah is for the relatives and neighbors of the deceased's family to prepare food for them, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) statement to his family when the news of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib's death, may Allah be pleased with him, reached them: "Prepare food for Ja'far's family, for indeed, something has come to them that preoccupies them."
