Why was the Prophet (peace be upon him) not fond of his flock of sheep exceeding one hundred, and if it did, he would slaughter one of the excess?

The hadith (definition) shows that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, owned one hundred sheep, no more. If a lamb was born, he would slaughter a sheep in its place. The reason for this is that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was averse to worldly possessions, only owning what he needed, and spending any surplus in the way of good. As for his limitation to one hundred, it was perhaps the sufficient number for him, and not an end in itself, so that their large number would not distract him from religious matters.
