God forbid that Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah would declare the Ash'aris to be disbelievers. He was the furthest of people from declaring others to be disbelievers. He explicitly stated that even the most extreme innovators among them are not to be declared disbelievers individually until proof has been established against them. So how could he declare the Ash'aris to be disbelievers?

Rather, he explicitly stated that the Ash'aris are the closest of the theological factions to the Sunnah, the Jama'ah, and Hadith. And that they are considered among the Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah when compared to the Mu'tazilah and the Rawafid. Indeed, they are the Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah in lands where the people of innovation are the Mu'tazilah and the Rawafid.
