What is the ruling on a husband saying to his wife: "Go, and you are…", then stopping speaking?
If a husband intends to utter the words of divorce but then refrains, nothing takes effect, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah has forgiven my Ummah for whatever crosses their minds, so long as they do not act upon it or speak of it." As for saying "go away" with the intention of divorce, it effects divorce because it is one of the ambiguous expressions (kinayah). However, if he said it intending to complete it with an explicit utterance, but then refrained, divorce does not take effect.
