Does the statement: "O Lord, do not hold me accountable for any covenant I have made with You" relieve the supplicant from the covenants he has broken with Allah, or is something required of him to fulfill them?

Whoever makes a covenant with Allah to abandon something unlawful must fulfill the covenant and stay away from sins, as Allah Almighty says: "And fulfill the covenant; indeed, the covenant will be questioned about." If one makes a covenant with Allah to abandon a sin and then commits it, they must repent for committing the sin and breaking the covenant. According to a group of scholars, they must also offer an expiation for an oath, based on Allah Almighty's saying: "And fulfill the covenant of Allah when you have covenanted, and do not break oaths after their confirmation while you have made Allah your guarantor." The statement: "O Lord, do not hold me accountable for any covenant I made with You" does not invalidate the covenant. A single expiation for an oath is required if you break the covenant, and the covenant is dissolved thereafter, unless the wording indicates repetition. The covenant is great in the sight of Allah. If what occurred was merely a firm intention to abandon the sin without uttering a covenant or an oath, then no expiation is required, but one must strive to resist the self and stay away from sin.
