What should a wife do if she wishes to separate from her husband due to his shortcomings in the marital relationship, his watching of pornographic films, his insulting her, and his ill-treatment of her, while the husband refuses to separate and wants her to seek Khul’ so that she relinquishes her rights, and her family asks her to be patient?

The husband's actions mentioned are not permissible in Islamic law and contradict the ethics of Islam, because a Muslim possesses good character towards everyone. Allah Almighty says: "Repel evil with that which is better." This is especially emphasized with regard to one's wife. Allah Almighty says: "And live with them in kindness." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best of you is the best to his family," and "Treat women kindly." The wife must be fed and clothed, her face must not be struck or disfigured, and she must not be abandoned except within the home. If a husband dislikes his wife, he should remember the words of Allah Almighty: "But perhaps you hate a thing and Allah makes therein much good." It is not permissible for him to retain her for the purpose of harm. The wife has the choice between patience and seeking reward for the sake of preserving her children, or seeking a khul' (divorce initiated by the wife) from the husband in exchange for what he requests, unless the disobedience originated from her.
