How can a woman see a suitor before engagement to decide whether to accept or reject him, and should this viewing be at home or elsewhere, knowing that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, commanded looking?

It is sunnah for a woman to look at her suitor, so that she may be pleased with what she sees in him, just as he is pleased with what he sees in her. This viewing should be without khalwah (private seclusion); rather, it should be in the presence of one of her mahrams (unmarriageable kin), whether in the home or elsewhere. This viewing is a sunnah and not a condition for the validity of the marriage. A woman is more deserving of looking than a man, because he can separate from a woman he is not pleased with, unlike her.
