Does the prohibition of drinking from the mouth of a waterskin include drinking from the mouths of bottles?
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade drinking directly from the mouth of a waterskin (siqa'). A waterskin is a vessel for water that has an opening (mouth). Scholars have mentioned reasons for this prohibition, including: not being able to see what is inside the waterskin, which might contain something harmful; the water overwhelming the drinker; and the drinker's saliva or breath touching the mouth of the waterskin, which others might find repulsive or which could transmit diseases. Some of these reasons are present when drinking from modern bottles. Therefore, it is advisable not to drink directly from the mouth of a bottle, especially if someone else will be drinking from it.
