What is the ruling on drawing in Islam?

Drawing has two meanings: The first is drawing animate beings, which is forbidden by Islamic law due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Every maker of images will be in the Fire," and because it imitates Allah's creation. An exception is made for what is necessitated by dire need. The second meaning is drawing inanimate objects like mountains and trees, and there is no harm in this.
