What should a man do when Satan tempts him with whisperings about the Essence of God?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

What the questioner feels are whisperings from Satan, and they are not new to believers; the Companions suffered from them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, clarified that these whisperings are from pure faith, because they are evidence of the believer's dislike for these thoughts. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said that the believer is afflicted with whisperings of disbelief, and this is evidence of great striving (jihad), and that they affect seekers of knowledge and worshippers more than others because they are targets for Satan.

These whisperings do not cause harm as long as the believer strives against them, ignores them, and does not act upon them or speak them, because Allah has overlooked them as long as the believer does not act upon them. These whisperings are not a reality that the believer believes in, but rather mere satanic thoughts whose goal is to corrupt faith.

To overcome these whisperings:

1. Seek refuge in Allah and stop them. 2. Remember Allah and exercise self-control. 3. Strive in worship and righteous deeds. 4. Increase in supplication and resort to Allah.
