Writing the adhkar (remembrance of Allah) without moving the tongue is hoped to be rewarded for the Muslim, especially if it is accompanied by intention in the heart. This is because dhikr (remembrance) is ideally done with both the heart and the tongue. What combines both is best, but if one is restricted to only one, the heart is superior. Writing stands in place of verbal utterance, just as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, conveyed his message through both speech and writing. The basis of dhikr is moving the tongue, and its most complete form is with the tongue accompanied by the presence of the heart. Obligatory dhikr, such as recitation in prayer, requires moving the tongue if one is able, and this is also recommended for supererogatory dhikr.
