Making food for the family of the deceased and sharing it with them as a consolation is permissible, based on the hadith: "Make food for the family of Ja'far, for that which preoccupies them has come to them." However, the family of the deceased making food for people is an innovation (bid'ah), and its ruling ranges between prohibition and severe dislike, based on the hadith: "We used to consider gathering at the house of the deceased's family and making food as a form of wailing (niyaha)." If the family of the deceased wishes to give charity, it should be to the needy, not by gathering people in their home.
