What can I do for God to accept my prayers and fasting, after I drank alcohol a few days before Ramadan?

Drinking alcohol is a major sin. It has been reported in the Hadith that the prayers of one who drinks alcohol are not accepted for forty days. The way out of this is sincere repentance and abstaining from it. The Hadith states: "If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance." One should also increase acts of seeking forgiveness (istighfar) and performing good deeds. It should be noted that swearing by other than Allah is not permissible, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever swears an oath should swear by Allah or remain silent."
