Is he who says that shaving the beard is reprehensible considered a disbeliever? What is the ruling on trimming it with an electric shaver, and is there a limit to how much can be trimmed?

Whoever holds the view that shaving the beard is merely reprehensible (makrooh) does not commit an act of disbelief (kufr). This is the relied-upon position of the Shafi'i school of thought, and it has been affirmed by a group of scholars. Such individuals are only countered by clarifying the stronger evidence for its prohibition (tahreem). As for trimming the beard with an electric shaver, this is considered a shortening (taqseer), not a shaving (halq). Scholars have differed regarding the permissible extent of trimming; some have not specified a limit, while others have limited it to what can be grasped in a fist (al-qabdah).
