Is it permissible to return the greeting of Jews out of necessity, for fear of the Muslim being accused of racism, or to buy necessities from them when they are not available from Muslims?

The fundamental principle is that a woman should remain in her home and not go out except for a necessity, provided she adheres to the regulations of Islamic law, based on the Almighty's saying: "And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance" (Al-Ahzab 33:33), and the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "You have been permitted to go out for your needs."

It is permissible for a Muslim to buy his needs from a Jew if they are not available from a Muslim, as the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) transacted with them.

As for returning their salutations, it is permissible if there is no fear of temptation. However, initiating the greeting to them is forbidden according to the majority of scholars, based on the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "Do not initiate salutations to Jews and Christians."

It is forbidden to befriend them or love them in the heart, based on the Almighty's saying: "There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, 'Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone'" (Al-Mumtahanah 60:4).
