Is it permissible to return greetings to foreign men, while bearing in mind that Muslims are a good example and should show the chastity of the Muslim woman? A woman greeting non-mahram men with peace (salam) and their returning of the greeting is permissible if there is no fear of temptation (fitna). Speaking between women and non-mahram men is permissible when there is a need, provided there is no khalwa (unlawful privacy) or softening of speech. Doing good to non-Muslims is by refraining from harming them, offering kindness, and inviting them to Islam, not by being lenient with the rulings of Sharia. If men are receiving treatment that prevents them from attending Friday prayer, they are excused for not performing it. A woman being in the kitchen while two men are in a closed room is not considered unlawful khalwa if suspicion is absent and there is no fear of temptation.
