Is it obligatory to perform ghusl after attending a funeral?

There is an agreement that ghusl (ritual bathing) or wudu (ablution) is not obligatory merely by attending a funeral. The Hanafis, Shafi'is, Hanbalis, and one opinion among the Malikis hold that it is recommended for the one who washes the deceased to perform ghusl, while the majority of Maliki jurists believe ghusl is not required of him. The Shafi'is and Hanbalis cited the hadith: "Whoever washes a deceased person, let him perform ghusl," and considered its obligation to be diverted by the hadith: "There is no ghusl upon you for washing your deceased, if you have washed him." As for wudu after washing the deceased, the majority of jurists do not consider it obligatory, while most Hanbalis deem it obligatory. Carrying the deceased and participating in the funeral procession does not necessitate wudu, although the Shafi'is recommend wudu after carrying the deceased.
