How can one deal with having reached 30 years of age without regularly performing prayers and fasting, while being aware of the Quranic verses and Prophetic hadiths that speak of the importance of worship and the consequences of neglecting it, and having a desire for guidance and consistency in acts of worship?
Praise be to Allah, who has blessed you with guidance. Know that there is a difference of opinion among scholars regarding the obligation to make up missed prayers and fasts. Sheikh Al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyyah) holds that whoever intentionally broke their fast will not benefit from making it up. According to this view, you should increase in good deeds that expiate sins, strive in voluntary acts of worship, and adhere to seeking forgiveness.
As for the view of the majority of scholars, which is the more cautious and absolving for one's responsibility, you must make up all that you missed by estimation. What we issue fatwa on in our website is the necessity of making up (these obligations), but it is permissible for you to follow Ibn Taymiyyah's opinion if you fear that you might revert to abandoning prayer due to the burden of making it up.
You must be mindful of the danger of abandoning prayer and fasting, and not repeat this great sin. You should constantly ask Allah for steadfastness, associate with righteous people, distance yourself from distractions, and be aware of the danger of abandoning these pillars, for it is more dangerous and greater than adultery, theft, drinking alcohol, and taking a life.
