What is the ruling on purchasing gems with real money in online games that do not involve Shar'i prohibitions, for the purpose of accelerating certain missions and developing items within the game?

Spending money on permissible games that relieve stress and energize one for obedience is permissible, provided the Shariah guidelines for online games are observed. As for the game Travian, fatwas have been issued prohibiting it and considering it idle amusement, as well as purchasing gold within it with real money.
