Is it permissible for a person to say about himself that he is a scholar?

It is permissible for a scholar to say about himself that he is a scholar if his intention is to demonstrate his knowledge for the benefit of people, and this is a commendable act. However, if he says it out of arrogance and self-admiration, then it is forbidden, due to the blameworthy pride it entails. And if he says it without a reason, then it is more apparent that it is not befitting, as it contradicts the humility appropriate for a Muslim and a student of knowledge.
